Sir Kay is a prominent figure in Arthurian legend, often depicted as King Arthur's foster brother and seneschal. He is a member of the Knights of the Round Table, though his characterization varies across different versions of the tales.
Kay's first appearance is difficult to pinpoint due to the evolving nature of the Arthurian legends. He is mentioned in early Welsh texts predating Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (c. 1136), which helped popularize the Arthurian mythos. From there, he appeared in numerous works.
He's often portrayed as a skilled warrior but also arrogant, boastful, and sometimes cruel. In some versions, he is depicted as Arthur's loyal companion, while in others, he is shown as a flawed and even antagonistic figure, ultimately contrasting his loyalty to the King.
